A Brief History of Bungee Riverboarding
The Roots: Canal Surfing in the 1970s
The concept of riverboarding dates back to 1930s Germany, but modern bungee riverboarding traces its roots to 1970s canal surfing. Riders used a rope tied to a bridge and a simple board to surf currents, moving side-to-side across the water. This activity planted the seeds for today’s sport.
Innovation in Equipment
Over the years, riders experimented with new materials to enhance the experience:
-Inner Tubes and Garage Door Springs: Early elastic systems that were functional but clunky.
-Silicone Rubber Tubing: A game-changer, offering smoother and more powerful propulsion.
-Latex Rubber Tubing: By the 1990s, latex became the standard, allowing riders to achieve speeds of up to 30 mph upstream.
Modern Riverboarding
Today’s riverboards are designed for speed, tricks, and hydrodynamic efficiency. The bungee system, paired with the right conditions—Fast Glass water—has turned riverboarding into an exhilarating blend of agility, creativity, and speed.
The Future of Bungee Riverboarding
Bungee riverboarding is where snowboarding was in the 1970s—virtually unknown but full of potential. Imagine how far snowboarding has come, from makeshift boards with ropes to cutting-edge Olympic gear. With more riders, innovation, and global exploration, this sport is poised for a similar evolution.
Our goal is to bring bungee riverboarding to rivers around the world and showcase it on the Olympic stage. Countries like Japan and New Zealand are primed for this sport, and the possibilities are endless.
Riverboarding is an exciting new board that is fun for all ages! Imagine harnessing the power of a fast-flowing river and a bungee cord to launch yourself upstream at over 30 mph—all while riding a board designed for tricks and speed. Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or a curious beginner, this sport offers an exciting way to experience rivers like never before. Riverboarding has already won the award for Best New Sporting Goods Product of the Year at the world’s largest sporting goods trade show (ISPO) and has been featured in top publications, including the NY Times and the front page of the Wall Street Journal!
Every purchase—whether it’s a sticker, a t-shirt, hoodie or a complete riverboarding system—supports the Even Riverboarding Team in its mission to introduce this incredible sport to the world and make it an Olympic event!
How Does It Work?
Riverboarders ride small surfboard/skimboard-style boards on fast-moving rivers with smooth surfaces. The magic lies in the bungee system: by harnessing the river's current, the bungee stretches and stores energy, launching riders upstream at speeds of 30+ mph. Experienced riders perform jaw-dropping tricks—imagine skateboarding stunts but on water, shooting upstream!
When the ride is done, the process is simple:
Float back downstream.
Hook your board to the bungee.
Stretch the bungee using the river’s current.
Get ready to ride again!
This sport is still emerging globally and is sometimes called Bungee Surfing, Bungee Riverboarding or just Riverboarding, much like how snowboarding once had different names.
